Da-On Dance presents ROOT

By KnJ Theater at Peridance (other events)

2 Dates Through Oct 16, 2016

ABOUT ABOUT

Choreographer JinJu Song-Begin, a recent immigrant to the US, investigates through a personal lens the psychological journey and challenges an immigrant undertakes in adapting to new surroundings. When adopting a new culture, how does one stay connected to her roots as the very meaning of “roots” begins to morph? ROOT will be performed by five dancers of different nationalities, incorporating their individual stories into the piece. Moving throughout the space during the work, the audience becomes a part of the community created on stage by the dancers and musicians. ROOT features an original score by Jerome Begin for violin and synthesizer, performed live by Begin and violinist Jennifer Choi.

About Da-On Dance

Da-On Dance was founded in August 2012 and is a NYC based modern dance company directed by choreographer JinJu Song-Begin. The name Da-On derives from a pure Korean word meaning, “All good things are coming.”  Da-On Dance has performed at several venues in New York City, Korea, and Singapore.  Song-Begin often creates work in collaboration with composer Jerome Begin, and presents her work with live original music. Artist Statement

My work often deals with my thoughts on what goes into the creation of a full life, a human life, a life well-lived. I choose to explore these ideas through the medium of the human body. I am interested in constantly changing the take-off point, varying the moment of inception for the creation of a new work: beginning from the conceptual, the kinetic, the musical, the visual, the spatial. Where can I start that will lead me to movement? When I choreograph, it is to relay a message, though not necessarily a specific message. I hope to offer impetus for thought, emotion, and something less definable.
